Progress on Track for Summer Trail Opening
The Rail Trail Advisory Committee (RTAC) convened on April 9, 2025, to review construction progress, funding status, and upcoming planning needs for the highly anticipated trail project. Here’s a summary of key updates and takeaways from the meeting:
Construction Update
Phase 1 of the trail remains on schedule for a June 2025 opening. While some amenities may not be installed in time for the ribbon-cutting, all essential safety features will be in place to ensure the trail is safe to use.
Six businesses have signed up to be Trail Partners and have agreed to share critical resources—water, parking, and restroom facilities—with trail users. RTAC encourages all users and supporters to extend appreciation and patronage to these partners, especially when using their amenities.
Despite pending reviews of federal grants, construction is progressing as planned, with no anticipated delays. The two main contracts are secure, with no expected changes to scope or funding. Congressman Chuck Edwards, a steadfast advocate of the project, reassured Chairman Chris Burns that he remains fully committed to supporting the trail through any ongoing federal or state review processes.
Looking Ahead: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Planning for the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be discussed at the next RTAC meeting May 14. As excitement builds around the trail’s debut, committee members are considering a unique “moving event,” which would highlight various locations along the trail. Discussions are underway with adjacent property businesses to serve as potential sponsors and hosts for celebration activities.
Trail Rules, Etiquette, and Events
Several updates were proposed and discussed to ensure responsible trail use:
- Waste receptacles are part of the trail design but may not be installed before the official opening.
- The committee suggested that E-scooter use be regulated under existing city and county guidelines, including operator permitting and enforcement.
- The committee requested that formal definitions be added for “Meet Ups” and “Events” within the trail rules.
- “Race” will specifically refer to foot races; bicycle races will not be permitted as the trail will remain open to the public during events
- Henderson County Parks & Recreation recommends a minimum 60-day notice for any event applications.
Importantly, the committee agreed that no permitted events will be held on the trail until 2026. The inaugural event will be hosted by Friends of Ecusta Trail (FOET) and is tentatively scheduled for spring 2026.
Stay tuned for more details in the coming months—and get ready to hit the trail this summer!
